| The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer better known as the
Redemptorists was founded on the 7th November 1732 in Naples by St. Alphonsus
de Ligouri. From small beginnings this group grew and is now worldwide. They came to
Limerick in 1853, to Dundalk in 1876 and to Belfast in 1896. Their Monastery and Church
here in Belfast is known as Clonard Monastery and from here they witnessed to the message
of God's Mercy. The video production is a story of thanksgiving for those one hundred years in which people from the Clonard community worked and supported one another, through the pains, suffering, anguish and poverty, the years of the Troubles and World Wars. They also rejoice together in times of God's Mercy, Peace, Reconciliation and Joy. The highlights of our Centenary Celebrations were our two Masses of thanksgiving. The first honoured the coming of the Redemptorists to Belfast on 1st November 1896 and the second commemorated the opening of the first Clonard Church on April 19th 1897. The Church was affectionately known by the people as "The Tin Church" |
