After many years as a spiritual director, Fr Peter Ward has identified a four-point
process which seems to underlie the spiritual growth of most people. Stage one is a deep
sense of dissatisfaction with life. Then a catalyst appears - it might be a simple thing
like reading a particular book or meeting and talking to an inspiring person, or it might
be a major event like the death of someone close, a change in work or an illness. Whatever
it is, this catalyst leads us to look at things in a different way - we begin to see God
differently, to see prayer differently, to see our-selves differently. This leads to the
fourth stage when we begin to get a real sense of purpose in life.
This is not a once-and-for all process but it continues again and again on the journey of
spiritual growth.
In this book, Fr Ward outlines the process and illustrates it by reference to the
spiritual journey which he knows best, his own.
Peter Ward, a Redemptorist priest, was educated in Ireland, Brussels and Rome. He
worked for twenty-one years as a missionary in India and is currently a retreat preacher
in Clonard Monastery in Belfast.
