In its early history the importance of Carrickfergus centres around its Castle. Old traditions say it derived its name from King Fergus, a Scottish King, who came to drink the waters of the well to cure
his leprosy but who drowned when his boat struck the rock. Hence the name Carrickfergus "theRock of Fergus".

When the then new church of St Nicholas opened in 1981 the 'Old Chapel' faced an
uncertain future. As it turned out, it lay derelict for seven years until in 1988, the
doors opened again to reveal its transformation into a wonderfully refurbished
community centre.
